Highlights for visiting London this winter

Every year over sixteen million people visit London, and winter is a particularly exciting time to visit the nation’s capital.

Whether it’s attending the city’s top sporting events, or even just taking in a show in the world-famous theatre district, London has so much to offer and so here are some of the seasonal highlights.

New Year in the capital

Londoners really know how to party, and the fireworks displays over the River Thames on New Year’s Eve are something that should be experienced by everybody at least once.

But make sure you don’t party too hard on New Year’s Eve as the New Year’s Day Parade kicks off at midday from Piccadilly Circus, and features hundreds of street performers from all over the world making the three-hour journey to Westminster that’s a fun and exhilarating way to start the New Year.

Sporting entertainment

Any visitor to a British pub will be more than familiar with the traditional game of darts. And what better way to further your knowledge of this fun game than by joining the thousands of people who are gathering to attend the Professional Darts Corporation Championships at Alexandra Palace.

The tournament is currently underway and there’s already a sizeable Dutch contingent who will be there to cheer on Michael van Gerwen, who has already proven to be one of the PDC’s favourites with the bookies on the Coral sports betting website.

Cultural highlights

Those looking for a respite from the winter weather could be well-served by a trip to the National Portrait Gallery that is currently hosting an acclaimed photography exhibition. Whereas if you’re looking for a stereotypically British form of winter entertainment, then a trip to the pantomime is definitely in order.

There’s a huge range of pantomimes in and around the theatre district in London over the winter months, with the likes of Aladdin, Snow White and Jack and the Beanstalk all providing the perfect festive entertainment for the whole family.
