Despite being hit hard by the 2004 tsunami, Koh Phi Phi has rebuilt itself and remains one of the most popular destinations in Thailand. Although many will choose to spend their days lounging on the island’s golden beaches, there is a great range of activities to enjoy on this idyllic island. Here are five of our favourites…

1 – Explore the underwater world

The warm, clear waters surrounding Phi Phi are home to some of Thailand’s most fantastic dive and snorkel sites. Head to Maya Bay, made famous by the film, “The Beach”, for great snorkelling. If you’re keen to dive a little deeper, visit one of the dive shops dotted around the island’s main streets to arrange full days of scuba diving. Maybe you’ll even opt to brave a night dive! Alternatively, you can join day trips that take you to feed black tip and leopard sharks, before heading to some coral gardens for superb snorkelling.

2 – Koh Phi Phi viewpoint

For the best views of the island make sure you hike up to the viewpoint. Whether you decide to visit at sunrise or sunset, remember to pack your camera and insect repellent. The walk takes around half an hour, but it is all uphill so give yourself more time if you prefer to take it slow.

3 – Rock climbing

Koh Phi Phi is made up of limestone cliffs with breathtaking views that’ll have rock climbers grinning in delight. Whether you’re experienced, or are keen to try your hand at the extreme sport for the first time, they’ll be trips perfect for you.

4 – Deep sea fishing

Although one of the more pricey activities on the island, Phi Phi is known for its fantastic deep sea fishing. You’ll have the chance to try and reel in barracuda, dorado, tuna, king mackerel, and if the idea floats your boat (get it?), you can even go night fishing.

5 – Nightlife

A stay on Koh Phi Phi is not complete without sampling its raucous nightlife. Begin the night with a Thai boxing match, before enjoying rooftop bars, and beach parties where you’ll see some world class fire shows. Just you be careful when the performers call on you to jump through the fire!
